Good News for Mr. Electric Birmingham!
Mr. Electric Birmingham North has recently taken on their first female apprentice electrician! Katie Harvey, 17, first started her journey with Mr. Electric Birmingham North when she did her work experience with them two years ago. After working with Mr. Electric for a week, her school tried to get a female electrician in to speak to students and encourage more women into industries such as electrical or plumbing. From her time with Mr. Electric and the encouragement from her school, Katie asked Mr. Electric if she could complete an apprenticeship with them.
They wanted Katie to be sure that going into electrics was what she wanted to do, so during her Easter Holidays, she spent three days out with their current electricians and thoroughly enjoyed herself and still seemed keen to join the Mr. Electric team. Katie has said that she wants to have a trade, and what better trade to get into than electrical, as she feels the world will always need an electrician.
Katie’s mum, Michelle, also works at Mr. Electric Birmingham North and is very proud of her daughter. “Everyone at the office was surprised when Katie showed an interest,” mum Michelle commented when speaking about her daughters’ enthusiasm in becoming an electrician.
Michelle told us that Katie attended an open day with South Staffordshire College. She has been guaranteed a place on their electrical course, which will be located on their TORC Campus in Tamworth. The Torc Professional and Technical Centre has recently undergone a massive refurbishment which will enable many students like Katie to gain the skills needed for many jobs in the engineering sector, along with other vocations.
It is Mr. Electric Birmingham North’s first female apprentice and South Staffordshire College has also commented that Katie is their first female electrical apprentice in three years. Katie has now been with Mr. Electric for a week shadowing their qualified electricians, and is looking forward to starting her course this September.
