A Way to Recycle Your Old Electrical Items
We all have it, a bunch of old phones in a box tucked away, or a drawer stuffed to the brim with old mp3 players, watches, calculators, torches, and remote controls that you can barely close. Getting rid of these items is always something that most people dread, as it gets to a point where it is too much and you either throw it all in a black bag, take it to the tip or let it sit there and collect more dust.
However, as small electrical items are made up of many valuable plastics and metals, these items should be recycled properly so that they can be used to make new things. Putting them all in a black bin liner and chucking it out means that instead of being reused, they will just sit in a landfill.
But for the people of East Staffordshire, this will be a thing of the past! The East Staffordshire Borough Council have developed a new scheme that helps their residents to recycle their old electricals.
From Monday, September 5, these smaller electrical items will be collected on the same day as the normal blue bin collection. The recycling collection vehicles have already been fitted with an extra tray for these items so that people can start emptying those cupboards and drawers and also make sure their electricals are being recycled properly.
Councillor Patricia Ackroyd, deputy leader for enterprise and environments, said: “It is important for us to increase the amount of unwanted equipment that is recycled appropriately.
“This is another example of the council taking positive steps to encourage recycling and responsible waste disposal.”
This is a fantastic step in the right direction for appropriate disposal of electrical items, and hopefully, the rest of the country will follow suit and do a similar thing to East Staffordshire Borough Council. For more information, visit the East Staffordshire Borough Council’s website.

It is a little more time consuming, but you do have the option of taking them to your closest recycling centre. Here they will most likely have a specific section for electrical items, that way you can make sure your items are recycled appropriately.
